Participatory approach and Open Space Technology: "How to have a more harmonious living between locals and immigrants in the city of Modena" (Modena, Italy, June 2nd 2010)
Introduction to Participatory approach and to Open Space Technology (OST)
Marianella Sclavi, expert of Conflict Mediation and Participatory approach to decision making, founder of Ascolto attivo sas (active Listening consultant firm), having provided in her long experience many consultancies to Local Authorities dealing with some issues characteristic of their own town, noticed that, in the case a Local Authority promoted a Participatory approach to face a specific issue, the result was much more successful than when the Local Authority simply tried to impose a specific solution for that issue. She experienced that the most successful solution to a specific complex issue was not given by a group of experts, but by a group with the maximum of diversity, made of all the possible stakeholders, as you can get using a Participatory approach. She realized moreover that most of the decisions taken by “experts” alone were doomed to find in their way some constituency that would have been adversed to that decision while, when the Local Authority involved the citizens and all those who were interested from the very beginning of the decision making process, not only the final decision but also the implementation process were shared by all, providing in the end a very efficacious solution and preventing any discussion/opposition in the future.
An O.S.T. or Open Space Technology is a particular Forum of discussion based on Participatory approach, tool for conflict mediation: details in the words by Marianella Sclavi - read more in her interview

- General Description of the Initiative
People of different cultures took part at the initiative held in Modena on June 2nd 2010 - OST: how to improve the cohabitation of different cultures living in the same town - and, in spite of not having any experience about the OST methodology, they contributed very actively, with passions and strong motivation, providing ideas about the way how to improve the quality of life in Modena. They just listened to the explanations given by Marianella Sclavi at the beginning of the OST (which rules and which methodology to follow) and then they immediately stood up and exposed their ideas in front of the audience. Appassionate discussions followed, developed in small groups, and concrete suggestions have been proposed to the Municipality of Modena, in the end. The contributions have been given by Italian, Immigrants, Institutions. An interesting interview to Marianella Sclavi, taken at the end of the OST, clarifies purpose of the OST, critical approach and results.

Sinergies with the Eugad Team
The Eugad Team will follow with great interest the future steps of the project VIA per VIA, as the Team thrusts a lot in the good result of this project, and in the significant experiences, knowledge and competencies derivable from it. The Eugad Team would also like to create sinergies with the Project VIA per VIA, for the many contact points it has with the project Empowering communities and LA Local Authorities in West Africa to develop Community based responsible Eco-tourism for an improved livelihood and a sustainable management of natural resources , whose Applicant is just the Municipality of Modena and whose Concept Note has just been approved by CE
